Our Mission
Lights Out Norlite (LON) is a 501(c)3 community based, non-profit organization which seeks to raise awareness of the negative environmental and health impacts from the operation of the Norlite aggregate production facility and hazardous waste incinerator in Cohoes, New York.
Our History
LON was formed in 2020 after many years of individuals expressing the health and environmental concerns of the Norlite facilities operation.
In 2022, LON officially became a project of the Green Education and Legal Fund, a 501(c)3 organization in the Capital District. This relationship has enabled us to obtain several funding grants to continue the vital work of education and advocacy for community health and safety.
Our Impact
LON has been involved in passing several state, county, and city level laws, which stopped Norlite from continuing to burn toxic aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF).
Through our advocacy work, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) took the unprecedented step to authorize the closure of Saratoga Sites, the housing complex adjacent to Norlite, and the relocation of residents to safer housing.
