Lights Out Norlirte welcomes the news of a temporary shutdown of Norlite’s core operations. We will continue our mission to clean air and a healthy environment, advocating for communities in and around Cohoes, pushing towards a permanent shutdown of the Norlite facility.

“Norlite, which has mined shale and used it to produce construction aggregate in Cohoes since 1956, is temporarily shutting down its main operations and laying off workers as it mulls its future.

Norlite, which is owned by a Spanish environmental services company called Tradebe, has been engaged in extensive litigation and regulatory battles with the state Department of Environmental Conservation over dust produced by the plant and its impact on nearby residential communities.

The company abruptly announced on March 24, 2024 that it would be “temporarily shutting down its core operations” in Cohoes as it “re-evaluate(s) the scope of its operations.”

The announcement comes as the state has been moving toward tougher new regulations.”
